Exclusive Interview With Interior Designer Barbara Barry

Barbara Barry is a beautiful contradiction: Her style is at once impeccably classic and essentially Californian in its mix of influences and relaxed air. That combination has struck a chord with our current mood for a put-together decor that accommodates casual entertaining. Her furniture for Baker and her Barbara Barry–brand bed linens, china, and even scented candles make it possible to live in a world of Barry’s designs—as do these tips and insights she recently shared with us. —Paul O’Donnell

Biggest mistake people make when decorating?
I’ve seen some problems develop when people start mixing too many styles. They end up losing the calm that our homes need to have.

Top tip for small spaces?

I recommend choosing different shades of a single color and sticking to just that.

What are the essentials of an inviting space?

I believe mood is everything. And you can achieve that through lighting—the key is to always use lamps and never use overhead lighting.

Best last-minute decor trick?
I would say the best trick under my sleeve is colored lamp shades.

Do you have a favorite solution for eco-conscious design?

My motto is just buy well and keep it forever.

A decor fad you hope never to see again?

French provincial is definitely one I hope to never see again.
What is a favorite recent project or project that you consider an emblem of your work?
The most recent project I consider to be very representative of my work on a whole would have to be the Savoy Grill in London’s Savoy Hotel.

Best piece of decorating advice?

Go slowly, buy quality, and trust your instructs … make it yours.
